When it rains...

Dorothy, we're not in Kansas anymore! When they say thunderstorms, they mean it. We drove down to New York last night, and was caught in a doozy. Trees were falling, branches were scattered all over the road, and lightning was striking everywhere.

The rain was coming down so hard, we had to pull over for a bit. The water filled the entire road and ran above the curb and gutter to flood the sidewalk. I have to admit, as the cars crawled through the deep water, Amy and I thought it would be fun to go "puddling" and see just how much spray a tiny Kia can make! We may have done it just a couple of times... :-0

Amy and I are in New Jersey this week becoming "Janome Certified". So, far, after 2 days of intense training, we are so happy with decision to become a Janome Dealer and are excited to come home and show you all the amazing features unique to the Janome line!

Monday we spent the day learning all the amazing features and functions of the brand new Horizon 7700. I am now fully convinced that this machine can also be called Lexi, because it is the Lexus of all sewing machines!

The accufeed system feeds the fabric through the foot and feed dogs in perfect sync, making the decorative stitches come out perfectly every time. I'm also extremely excited for the release of the Quilt Binding Foot next month. I watched it with my own eyes - it can bind a quilt in 1 step! And... the first photo shows the size of the monogram stitches - a full 7mm!

Yesterday, we were introduced to the world of embroidery. Since it was the first time either of us had ever embroidered in our lives, the rest of the class was convinced we'd been living in a cave. We are giving them such a great first impression of Idaho! ;-) Today, we are off to certify on the Digitizer software to create and customize our own embroidery images. With any luck, we will have the Quilt Barn logo embroidered on anything and everything by next week. Just kidding!

Spearmint Quilt

The Spearmint quilt is a variation of the Woodland Delight Quilt Pattern by Paula Prass (a free download from her blog)  I used scraps from making the quilt top to create the stripes in the backing. You can download a sheet showing how I made the quilt top and backing here: The Spearmint Quilt. All prints are from Amy Butler and the solid is Tarragon from Robert Kaufman.

Have you entered?

Here's how it works:
1. Purchase a copy of Schnibbles Times Two by Carrie Nelson of Miss Rosie’s Quilt Company.

2. Use any currently available Layer Cakes and/or Charm Packs from Moda Fabrics and make any quilt from the book Schnibbles Times Two by Carrie Nelson of Miss Rosie's Quilt Company.  *Contestants may enter as many quilts in this contest as they like. Each quilt must be accompanied by a separate completed and signed entry form.

3. Each quilt must be delivered to The Quilt Barn by closing time on July 31, 2010. “Finished” means bound and quilted (either by the contestant or someone else), with a label and hanging sleeve. The completed and signed “Schnibbles Contest Entry and Publicity Release Form” must be attached to the quilt.

4. All contestants’ quilts will be displayed in the shop for everyone to enjoy. The Quilt Barn will have a contest (*check for the details about the local contest at the store) to select one winning quilt from the entries submitted to their shop. Martingale & Company and Moda Fabrics assume no responsibility for the outcome of local shop contests. Each local winner will become a finalist in the overall competition.

5. One finalist will be selected by viewer’s choice vote and photos of that quilt will be submitted to Martingale & Co. by August 16, 2010, for the overall competition.

6. Winners of the overall competition will be selected September 15, 2010, and will begin receiving their prize shipments in September!

For more details, entry forms and contest rules come and see us!

Stunning beauty...

If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would have never believed that you could make a wedding dress with the long arm quilting machine! Carissa Zanella of Hillbrook Studio, designed this pattern for the Statler Stitcher (our computerized quilting machine). Her award winning gown is truly breathtaking! If I started beading now, do you think I could make one for Halle by the year 2030? I've got 20 years, I better get started!

Classes are wrapping up today in Columbia, Missouri, where I've spent the last 3 days learning how to design and digitize quilting patterns, and tips and tricks to make your quilts even more beautiful with my Statler. I can hardly wait to get home and start "playing"!

A new chapter...

I can't believe Logan graduated from High School this weekend! Whether I'm ready or not, here comes a new phase of life for Doug & I. It's so odd to think that he'll be off to school soon and starting a new chapter in his own life. How will he ever make it without me micromanaging his decisions? ;-) Who am I joking? He cut the apron strings a long time ago and he can hardly wait to enter "the real world" where responsibilities are minimal and freedom abounds! I asked my sister how long it takes after they go off to college that they begin to realize how good they had it at home. She said, "About 2 weeks, when they run out of underwear and get tired of ramen noodles." Since Logan has been doing his own laundry for years, and is an impressive sous chef, I may not hear from him for months! :-O

A Modern Flair

Denise Schmidt is one of my favorite designers and I just love her new pattern, Stacking the Odds. Great for beginners and experts alike, this pattern has templates for each shape to make piecing a breeze. You can make it any size - we chose queen and were thrilled with the results. Using the new Big E Group fabric by Michael Miller, the quilting has big psychadelic swirls and screams modern!

Good job lil' sis!

My little sister, who is more commonly referred to as "Coach Hansen", completed her very first quilt! Her team couldn't believe that she went to a quilting retreat, but little do they know that her big sister (yours truly) has reeled her in and she is hooked on this fun, new creative outlet. This quilt is a new pattern and fabric by Sweetwater for Moda. The fabric is called "Make Life" and the pattern is "Make Life Sweet". What a great graduation gift - get the kit online or in the store for $79.00 and let us quilt it for you for just $35!

Merging my hobbies

Before my life at the Quilt Barn, I used to love to make greeting cards. I wanted to send some thank you notes to the good people at Moda who provided such an amazing retreat for me last weekend. I used some Steam A Seam lite and ironed it to the back of my charm pack squares, then went to town with my scissors. After playing with almost every decorative stitch my machine can muster, TA-DA... here are the results. I had "sew" much fun making these cards from a new charm pack by Fig Tree called "Fresh Cotton". I met Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree Quilts at the retreat and she is just as sweet as can be. The Quilt Barn is so excited to introduce Fig Tree Club this summer!

needs and wants...

Halle loves the new Freebird fabric by Moda and she tells me she "needs" a new skirt. She's obviously using the word "need" VERY loosely, because I make her a skirt from every other fabric line that hits the store! How can you not when Pink Fig gives you such a piece of cake pattern (The Girly Skirt) that wastes no fabric? With this skirt, it is less expensive to sew one than buy it in the store. And how fun is it to have an original!

Friday, April 9, 2010

It was a beautiful day in Dallas, Texas, and I spent the day learning from Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree Quilts, Roseann Kermes of Rosebud's Cottage, and Susan Fuquay of American Quilt Retailer. Let me tell you, their creative talent was inpiring! Doug played a sympathy card to win a new "Slice" - a cutting machine that is AMAZING! He wrote on his entry card, "I deserve to win the Slice because... since my wife won't let me use her scissors with the flowers on the handle, I am left with no way to cut my applique shapes." So, as if Doug doesn't get enough opportunities to get in touch with his feminine side by simply working at a Quilt Shop, he now owns a pink cutting machine! One of my favorite things about visiting Moda is their "lab", or their version of the perfect Quilt Shop. It is always decked out in adorable quilts, projects, and displays and inspires me to make my shop more beautiful. As soon as I get somewhere with a faster internet connection (this hotel internet is almost as fast as Morse Code), I will post a slide show for you to drool over!

Moda's Warehouse

Today was AMAZING! Doug and I arrived at Moda's Headquarters, here in Dallas, Texas, and had the opportunity to tour the warehouses... thats right, I said warehouses. They have 3 huge buildings that house their facilities. Fabric arrives on huge 150 yard rolls and are rolled onto the bolts you see in the store on a machine like this one. It is amazing how fast they can empty 150 yards onto bolts!

We also were lucky enough to get a sneak peak in the design room. :-) Fabrics currently in the "design" phase, will hit stores in January 2011. The first picture is a fabric line from a brand new Moda designer. More sneak peaks tomorrow.....stay tuned!

Baby Doll Bunting

I just love Moda's Bakeshop - they just keep the fun free patterns coming faster than I could possibly make all the adorable projects! For Christmas, my daughter received some baby twins. She wasn't really sure about having a boy doll, so he often was ignored and left in the stroller while she played with the girl twin. After making this cute little baby doll bunting out of some flannel scraps, he is cuddly and A-OK to play with! Find the free pattern at Moda's Bake Shop (click here).

The WONKY Craze!

I don't know when I've had more fun with my sewing machine! All credit to Jacquie at Tall Grass Prairie Studio, I have become a huge fan of WONKY! Wonky houses, trees, blocks, stars...you name it. I guess I love that you don't need a pattern and there is no wrong way to do it. Each block is absolutely unique and even if you use the same fabrics as someone else, your quilt is going to look completely different. If you're ready to jump out of the box and try something new and different, sign up for our first class in the 2010 Wonky series and make your own wonky block quilt on Saturday, Jan. 23rd!

LOVE it!

Join Jenele on Wednesday, January 27th from 6-9pm, to make this adorable Valentine's Day table runner by Jacquelyn Gering of tallgrassprairiestudio.blogspot.com. Class is $25 and includes all materials (including backing, batting, and binding) Too cute!
