Fabric Friday - Urbanista

We got in a new fabric line, Urbanista, by Belinda Gee for Studio E. This is a bright and graphic line and some of the prints remind me of mid century modern decorating .

Studio E has provided a free pattern for this fabric line. You can find it here. Judy will be making this quilt up for a shop sample and will also be assembling a few kits. I will share her quilt when it is all finished and the kits are ready. You can pick up fat quarter bundles of this line here

Laura and I have adjusted the settings on the blog so that the blog post author's name (Tara, Laura and occasionally, Heather) will appear at the bottom of the post. Welcome Laura to the Quilt Barn blog.

And finally we have the class list that so many of you have been asking us about. We are getting our classroom back very soon (you may have noticed all the construction and such going on next to us) . You can find a list of our classes at the top of the blog.

Happy Friday!!

Covered Note Book Tutorial

I was in Barnes and Noble a few days ago looking at notebooks. When I start a new project I like to have a fresh notebook. I then realized that I could make one and it could reflect me.

Here is the quick, no frills covered notebook tutorial.

What you will need:

a notebook (I picked mine up at Michael's on sale for .99)
hot glue and gun
pen
fabric you want to cover your notebook (my fabric is leftover quilted fabric from a pillow I made.      You will see the pillow in our newest window blog post. The first photo gives you a bit of a peek)

You can quilt up your fabric with a scrap of batting and backing. The backing won't be seen so you can use anything. Straight lines, stipple, its up to you. You can also use your Frixon heat erase pen to draw a design on your fabric.

Lay your notebook on top of your fabric and trace around your open book with a pen (the picture doesn't show the book open but it needs to be). Add 3 inches to either side of your open book length.
Cut on your traced lines. A ruler and rotary cutter works great for this.

Start by hot gluing the extra 3 inches of length to the inside of you book cover, press and smooth fabric.
Continue gluing the fabric around your book paying attention to the outer edges of the book and the spine.
My book had a twill tape tie so when I got to where the tie was attached to the book I cut a slit in the fabric to accomodate it.

And there you have it. The edges are going to fray a bit but it was quick and I made myself a new notebook for .99

If you have any questions or notice anything I left out let me know. We love hearing from you.

Quilt Walk Weekend

Did you go?!  If you did I hope you stopped by our window display and checked it out!  We did our window in a Halloween theme...it was fun and eclectic!  Heather made the stacked Tula Pink Nightshade quilt (the blue, purple and green one)  and Jenele made the wonky cut orange and black quilt!  We still have fabric to make both at the Quilt Barn!

Lucky Tanner was the official T-Shirt salesman on Saturday,  did he talk you into one?!

Don't forget...the Quit Barn also has amazing yarns!

Here are some other amazing quilts that various people from the community made.

Love the colors of the one above and just love the graphicness of the one below!  Did you see any quilts there that were your favorites?

Thank you to those that helped support the Quilt Walk in any way!

Vintage Modern UFO

I am on my second Vintage Modern, by Bonnie and Camille, project. I can't help myself.
Remember the free for September pattern I told you about. This one? Its getting made up with 3 of my favorite bolts from this line.

I have tomorrow off so I am hoping to work on a few more UFOs (unfinished object) and gather some things for our new window. Thursday one of our windows gets taken down and a new one is being put up. It is kind of a wacky idea so I am a little nervous but if it works it will be real fun.

Anyone actually count up how many UFOs they having going? I am afraid to.

Fabric Friday Vintage Modern

We now have Bonnie and Camille's Vintage Modern is stock. We had the precuts of this line and they sold quickly.  Bonnie and Camille's lines, Bliss for example, have always been a big hit. Here is the teal, green, and greys.

And the red and pinks. Those dots are calling my name. We got in 3 solids coordinating bolts too. You can see a peek of the coral to the right.

I made a quilt using this line and will share pictures next week. I was trying to get the pattern written up before I shared it but I am not sure that is going to happen. There just isn't enough hours in the day.

You can find these fabric here at our etsy store. Many of our fabrics are listed in fat quarter bundles but we are always happy to create a custom listing for you of any of our listed fabrics and in the cuts you need. Shipping is free within the US for orders over $75.

One last thing, I want to say a big thanks to all of you who come into our shop and tell us that you read the blog and those who leave comments here and on facebook. It really is a thrill when we hear from you. So, thank-you for your support!!

Moda Folding Wire Carts

Look what we finally got back in stock. The Moda laundry carts have been on back order for a while and we have had so many of you ask about them. I put a few on etsy. They are 89.99.

We have 8 of them in stock. They are the perfect wire cart to use with this Moda Bakeshop pattern.
The Moda stock photo above shows the cart filled with scrap bags, another super popular item. We have those on order so fingers crossed we get those soon too. I love scrap bags!

All of us Barn Chicks have been busy putting out new product this week. Our back room was so full of boxes we could hardly walk around. Laura and I will be putting the new bolts of fabric in our etsy and webstore shop. I will be showing some of these new fabrics here on the blog so stay tuned.

Quilt Walk and Urban Market T-Shirt

Its that time of year for the Magic Valley Quilt Walk and Urban Market.

You are going to see us Barn Chicks wearing our Quilt Walk t-shirts this week. They are $15 and you also get an entry to win prizes from all the sponsors. The Quilt Barn has donated a $100 gift certificate (can be used in store and at our etsy and webstore) and a machine quilting gift certificate. Wow right?!

You don't have to participate in the Quilt Walk to win the prizes so I put a few t-shirts on etsy so you can have a chance at winning the prizes.

I am slowly gathering up quilt related t-shirts so I can make a t-shirt quilt some day.

Also, we will be having a display window at The Walk so be sure to check it out.

The Quilt Walk is September 21, 10-6 and September 22, 10-4 at Historic Downtown Twin Falls (Main Street). Be sure to check out Scrappin Girlfriends, its a great shop.

Meet Jenele!

Jenele is one of our very own Quilt Barn Chicks! She has worked here from the get go (about 4 years!)  She grew up in the Salt Lake City, Utah area.  She attended Rick's College where she studied Home Economics and became an expert in cooking and sewing.  There she met her husband and together they had 6 kids (5 boys and 1girl!!)  After raising her 6 kids she went back to school where she got her degree in Elementary Education.

She was first introduced to sewing when she was a young girl.  Her very patient grandmother let her play with scraps of fabric and sew them together on her sewing machine.  Jenele said everyone needs a grandmother like hers.  Someone that will just let you play without worrying about the machine or anything.  Jenele also said that sewing is just who she is....it's in her blood and bones!

Jenele finds her inspiration for sewing and quilting on Pinterest, various magazines and lots and lots of blogs!  Some of her favorite blogs are:  In Color Order, Film in the Fridge, Quilt Story, and Posie gets Cozy.  Although, she might like Posie gets Cozy's dog better than anything!

One tip Jenele would give to new quilters, old quilters, all quilters is to measure twice...cut once!  Nothing is worse than having to unpick something because of an error of measure.  Her favorite gadget is the friXion pen.  It is a marking pen that disappears with heat.  Jenele uses it in her embroidery and quilting patterns...if you don't like it one swipe of the iron and you're good!

(The Quilt Barn carries the friXion pens...they're right up front by the register...they really are amazing)

When I asked Jenele what her favorite color pallet or fabrics to work with is , she instantly said anything bright!  However, she then rattled off several different types of fabric she likes to work with.  They include, bright, modern, anything with animals on it, Dr. Suess, anything scrappy, and of course solids (as you can see above!)  Solids are one of her favorites because of the high contrast that they provide!  She does know how to work the solids!!

So because of Jenel's love of modern, graphic prints.  We've put together a bundle of fabric that Jenele hand pulled herself (pictured below).  So stop on by to The Quilt Barn and check out some of Jenele's favorite fabric!  Just ask for "The Jenele!"

Feather Bed Pillow with Chicopee

I finished piecing my Chicopee Feather Quilt top and now I am on to the quilting with chunky perle cotton. I had one block left over so I thought I could practice the stitches on a pillow.
I am kicking myself for not having one feather go one way and the second one the other way.
I was walking around my house looking for a good place to take a picture of it and wow, it really matches my Hope Valley quilt, also by Denyse Schmidt. The quilt pattern is Hills and Hollars by the same artist.

I used a 2 layer sandwich (pillow top and batting), some spray baste, and a few bent safety pins to prep for quilting.
I also used my awesome heat disappearing Frixon pen and traced 1/4" lines with a ruler around the feather. I was able to load about 4 stitches with perle cotton on my needle. It went by fast.

I didn't have a pillow form in the right size so I used left over batting. I think it needs a feather pillow to give it a bit of slouch.

Amy just finished quilting a shop sample of mine and hopefully I will get to the binding this weekend and will share it with you next week. Have a great weekend!

Hope Tote with Chicopee & Free Patterns

I am still running like a madwoman with Chicopee. You can expect a few more projects from me with this fabric line, I love it. I found this free tote bag pattern from Denyse Schmidt and had to make it. Cause, you know, this is the summer of the bag for me. I started back sewing quilts but I had to make make one more bag. She has a few free patterns over there so take a peek.
I used leftovers from the fat quarters to make a binding to attach to the top. The pattern doesn't include a lining but it would be easy to add one.

One of my favorite blogs, Badskirt, is giving her readers a free down load of her Moxie Doxie plush dog. It is so stinkin cute. Pop by, download the pattern (it is free for one month) and leave a comment and telling her how awesome she is.

And is it just me or does my arm look beefy?
