Chicopee Feather Bed Quilt

I finally finished my Chicopee Feather Bed quilt.
I used a Chicopee jelly roll by Denyse Schmidt. The pattern is Feather Bed, a free pattern by Anna Maria Horner.

I love this quilt. I might have cursed it a bit while hand quilting it. It seemed I always had more feathers to quilt, they never ended.  I used 3 different perle cottons for the quilting.

Also, I did machine quilt in the ditch a few rows to stabilize the quilt for the hand quilting. I use 505 spray baste and bent safety pins but I wanted a little something extra.
I hand quilting simply by laying the quilt on my lap so I didn't want thing to come un-glued, so to speak.  And it didn't.

I want to give a big shout out to Laura for taking awesome photos of my quilt for me. She has been taking the majority of the quilt photos for us. She is a great photographer. I commissioned her to take photos of my girls for me and I am so happy with them (psst, if you go here this is my oldest girl).  I have to say that I got a little something in my eye when I went through the disk. So, thanks Laura for great blog quilty phots!

And I had to show you the backing.  I love this piece. It is Anna Maria Horner's Pangea from Loulouthi Needleworks. It needs to be pajama pants next. Its 58/60 wide so I didn't have to piece the back. Sweet!

Crazy Patch Halloween Quilt

Jenele makes the most fun quilts. She gathered up the Halloween bolts of fabric and put together this fun quilt. She used the book Simple Choices by Abby Lane Quilts.

She quilted the quilt on her home machine. She does such a great job. I could take a few lessons from her.

We have a few kits left so I put one on etsy.
I am off to finish making Halloween costumes. Nothing like leaving it to the last minute.

For all of you in the East we are thinking of you and hope you are safe and see and speedy end to this disasterous weather!

Scrappy Edge Free Quilt Pattern Tutorial

Sometimes fun things happen when you dig around your UFO bin. I found 15 finished selvege blocks from more than a year ago. Jeez, why didn't I do anything with them?
I put my thinking cap on tried to come up with a quick pattern to use these up.

Voila,  the Scrappy Edge Quilt. As I was finishing this up I thought I should take notes so I could share the pattern with you. Finished Size: 54X63

Here is what you will need:

paper piecing paper (I used an old phone book)
selvege strips (not sure how many, a big pile saved over time)
1 3/4 yards solid white
3 yards backing
1/2 yard binding
54X63 piece batting

Several years ago I started saving my selvege strips. I would cut them off my fabric right after I bought it. I do not recommend this. Big bad idea. I was eager, what can I say. I have a milk crate full.

From your paper piecing paper cut 20- 8"X8" squares and 30- 3.5"X3.5" squares

To make the large squares start by laying a strip down the middle.

Lay the next strip on top leaving a bit of the colored fabric showing. Sew down close to the edge of the second strip. Continue with this all the way to the corner.

Go back to your original middle strip and tuck a strip under it.

Sew down close to the edge on the original first strip. Continue to the other corner by tucking a strip under the last strip. Turn the finished block over and using the paper as a guide trim the strips off making a clean 8X8 block. Make 20 blocks. You can then gently rips away the paper

To make the small blocks start by placing a string on one edge and then lay another on top leaving a piece of colored fabric showing. Sew close to the edge of the second string. Continue sewing on strips all the way to the other edge. Again, flip the block over and trim using the paper as your guide. Gently rip the paper away. Make 30 of these.

Solid white fabric:
Block Sashing: Cut 10 3.5" Strips width of fabric. Subcut in to 49 8" rectangles
Outer Border: Cut 6 4.5" Strips width of fabric

Assembling the large block rows:
-gather 5- 3.5X8" rectangles and 4 strip blocks
-decide how you want to lay out your strip blocks, if there will be a pattern to the direction of the diagonal strips. Keep this in mind as you sew your rows.
-sew one rectangle to the left and one rectangle to the right side of a block.
-to the right side the rectangle sew another block. Then another rectangle, a block, a rectangle, a block, a rectangle, a block, a rectangle.
- Make 5 of these large blocks rows

Small block rows:
-gather 5 small blocks and 4 white rectangles. These rows are made the same way as the large rows but you start with the blocks and not the rectangle.

If that was super confusing you can use  the full quilt picture as a reference for the row configuration.

I quilted the top with a diagonal lines going through each block. I premarked the lines before sandwiching the quilt top batting and backing with a Pilot Frixon Pen and a large ruler (the lines disappear with an iron).

Halloween Window Part 2

First I want to remind everyone that we are having a sale on our machine quilting this week, 25% off, until the end of Saturday. This will be our last sale before Christmas and our cut off for quilts finished for Christmas will be a check in of November 15.
You can mail your quilt in and have the mail date stamped before Saturday. If you have any questions give us a call.

Part 2 of our Halloween Window. Laura, Tanner and I had such fun putting this window together. I had a willow tree die this summer and I had a brain wave. Hang that dead tree in the window.
We hung it horizontal and I stuck a few little hidden things in there. If you have been by, did you see them?
You can see another view of Heather's Tula Pink Nightshade Quilt. Also hanging on the end of the bed is a minky on minky quilted quilt, perfect for this time of year.
Tucked in the head of the bed is one of the sisters made in to a ruffle edge pillow.

Jenele's Olive the Owl is perched in a hand carved ladder chair and handmade Halloween rattle. Behind you can see Jenele's Haunted House quilt. We have a few more of these kits in stock. If you would like one give us a call and I will make you a custom order on etsy (250-4230-5092).

No quilt shop Halloween window would be complete wihout a vintage sewing machine.

Heather had book marked this rug pattern a while ago and when she saw Nightshade she pulled the pattern back out, she had found the perfect fabric,. I think it would also make a great table topper. I am not sure of the pattern but when I lock down the magazine I will update this post.

The final sister, a rogue pirate, is imortalized in a framed portrait in this custom bedroom. I simple ironed on a piece of fusible interfacing and cut around the frame. A fat quarter was taped to the cardboard frame insert (this frame was a mirror that we spray painted) and the portrait was taped to that. Done. The fat quarter can be reused.

Laura and I are busy planning our December windows. Pinterest has been a big help with inspiration. You can follow our Quilt Barn Pinterest Board.  Also find us on facebook.  Big thanks for all your support! You make our day!!

Happy Halloween! Window Part 1

Tara LOVES Halloween! So she was super pumped about our new "spooky" Halloween themed window.  We decorated with a quilt Heather made out of Tula Pink's Nightshade Halloween line.  This fabric is such a fun modern twist from the traditional Halloween theme!

The Nightshade line features three sisters and there is a fun back story for this trio. We have all the pieces to this collection still in stock.

Hoarded vintage pompom fringe looped over the iron headboard

Isn't that Witch Doll the cutest thing you ever did see!

The quilt pattern Heather used was from the book "Quilts from the House of Tula Pink" named Stacks...isn't it just the funnest pattern!

So make sure you come see our very spooky and creepy Halloween window! Part 2 of this fun window will be revealed this week.
Also, we have a great free quilt pattern using selvege strings at the end of the week so pop back for that.
Happy Monday!

Blogger's Quilt Festival

Welcome to The Blogger's Quilt Festival.
I recently finished a quilt I've been working on. It's a pattern by Lizzy House called "Castle Treasury!" This quilt did take a lot of pre-planning but was not a difficult pattern to sew at all.

I personally really like working with solids; they create high contrast and a very graphic pattern.

My favorite part of the quilt is the binding!  I LOVE stripes!!  I also went with a tight quilting pattern...this one is called Pebbles.  Do you have any projects you've just finished?!

Finished Quilt Size:58X67
Special Techniques Used: Machine Pieced and Gammel Long Arm Quilted
Quilted By: Laura Watts Walsh
Best Category: ROYGBIV Quilt

Pop on over to the festival to check out all the great quilts.
